St. Barbara
17/12/2011
Today, the Orthodox Church celebrates commemoration day of St. Barbara. Saint Barbara became a Christian in the fourth century, and gave her life for the faith. She was born in Phoenician city Heliopolis in a rich and noble family. Her mother died early, his father - a pagan Dioscorus strongly indulged his daughter. Saint Barbara was extraordinarily beautiful, so Dioscurus considered that ordinary people should not see the beauty of his daughter. He had built for her a separate tower and locked in the daughter. St. Barbara was not interested in worldly honors. She also did not think about marriage. Dioscurus, who dreamed of marriage and family life of his daughter, found the reluctance of daughter to marry a consequence of the closed life and gave her more freedom. He had built for her a bath in which was two windows in order to cherish the pagan symbols of the moon and sun. Once, Dioscorus had to go on business far away from home. At this time, Saint Barbara became a Christian and returned to Heliopolis father realized that her daughter was not interested in his pagan gods and she professes a different faith. Saint Barbara suffered a martyr's death at the hands of his own father. At one time, her relics were buried in Heliopolis, then they were moved to Constantinople, and now they are in Kiev, Vladimir's Cathedral.
